Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration

Also known as age-related macular degeneration, this is a medical condition that may cause anything from blurriness to complete vision loss in the central area.

Macular degeneration, primarily age-related (AMD), results from damage to the macula, a small area near the centre of the retina.

You may be experiencing cataracts if you have any of these symptoms:

  • Central blurry vision
  • Wavy vision
  • Trouble seeing at night
  • Difficulties reading or driving or recognising faces

What are the types of macular degeneration?

AMD exists in two forms: dry and wet.

Dry AMD occurs when cells in the macula break down over time, leading to gradual vision loss.

Wet AMD involves abnormal blood vessel growth under the macula, causing rapid and severe vision impairment.

While the exact cause remains unclear, a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors plays a significant role in its development.

How to detect macular degeneration?

Regular eye testing is a good idea to keep track of any early changes in the back of your eye. At MediSpecs Camden, we always check for macular degeneration with our Comprehensive eye examinations.

How to decrease risk of macular degeneration?

Risk factors include aging, genetics, smoking, and prolonged exposure to UV light. Quitting smoking advised, and a diet with plenty of green leafy vegetables to decrease the risk of macular degeneration.

How to treat macular degeneration?

The type of macular degeneration will indicate the appropriate treatment, which may be eye supplements or intravitreal injections.
