Glaucoma

Glaucoma

There are a number of different types of glaucoma which CAN all result in optic nerve damage and loss of vision if left untreated. Glaucoma is sometimes called “the sneak thief of sight”.

You may be experiencing glaucoma if you have any of these symptoms:

  • Loss of peripheral vision
  • Vision deterioration develops slowly over the years, and may not be detected until an optometric eye examination.

How can you treat glaucoma?

In the vast majority of cases, glaucoma is easily and successfully managed with eye drops. Additional treatments may be a quick YAG laser and trabeculectomy.

Vision that is lost to glaucoma can never be repaired so it is important for early detection and routine eye examinations.

What is open angle glaucoma?

The most common type of glaucoma is “open-angle” glaucoma. There is an elevated pressure of the fluid inside the eye, intraocular pressure.

What is closed angle glaucoma?

The onset of closed angle glaucoma can be gradual or sudden. If sudden, it may involve severe eye pain, redness of the eye, mildly dilated pupil and nausea. There is elevated eye pressure in the eyes.

What is normal tension glaucoma?

Normal tension glaucoma is different to the other two in that there is no elevation of the pressure inside the eye, but it otherwise shows all the characteristics of the other types of glaucoma.

Have you been tested for glaucoma?
